Timmy’s New Friend. Written by Andreas Dierssen. Illustrated by Felix Scheinberger. North-South Books, 2004. 32 pages. While playing with his hare friend, Timmy the hare meets Bruno the bear. After Bruno accidentally squashes Timmy’s new ball, Timmy decides he does not want to be friends with Bruno because he is a bear. When Bruno rescues Timmy from a bully, Timmy decides that a bear can be a very valuable friend. Although the characters are animals, the story teaches a valuable lesson about prejudice without being overly didactic. Animal characters appeal to children and have a long tradition in fables and folktales. The book can be an excellent springboard to open a discussion about racial and ethnic prejudices and tolerance of individual differences. The book presents a well-written and interesting story while the illustrations provide an appealing and age appropriate visual experience. The format, layout and large illustrations lend this book to a group read-aloud. Fiction picture book. Interest level: Grades PreK-2.
