Topic - Animals in Society
Understanding - Zoos, pet shops and kennels should provide good animal care. Activities - Take the children to visit a zoo, pet shop or kennel. On return to the classroom have them act out what was seen. Supplemental Information - Young children will react to the basic activities of the animals such as fighting, eating, and elimination as well as some of the cute antics.
- Read-aloud: Deep in the Jungle. Written and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino. Atheneum Books for Young Readers, 2000. After being tricked into joining the circus, a lion escapes and returns to the jungle where he lives peacefully with the animals he used to terrorize. Picture book. Interest level: Gr. PreS-3.
- Read-aloud: Tina and the Penguin. Written by Heather Dyer and illustrated by Mireille Levert . Kids Can Press, 2002. When Tina meets a penguin who's tired of living in the zoo, she decides to help him escape. After she sneaks him home, she realizes that her new pet's special needs may be just too hard to manage in a normal house. Picture book. Interest level: Gr. K-2.

Understanding - Animals fulfill many human desires for which non-animal substitutes exist. Activities - Make a bulletin board display showing how animals provide us with many products (eggs, wool, milk, leather, meat, etc.) Next to each item display a cruelty free or healthy substitute that does not involve harming or killing animals. Have children sit quietly to observe and listen to animals in the environment. Draw their attention to the antics of squirrels and the songs of birds. Encourage them to express their pleasure in these.
- Read-aloud: The Nest. Written by Chris Baines and illustrated by Penny Ives. Interlink Publishing, 2007. It is Springtime and two birds are getting ready to nest as children observe the daily activity. Fiction picture book. Interest level: Gr. PreS-2.
- Read-aloud: CLICK, CLACK, MOO: Cows That Type. By Doreen Cronin with pictures by Betsy Lewin. Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2000. When Farmer Brown's cows find a typewriter in the barn they start making demands, and go on strike when the farmer refuses to give them what they want. Interest level: Gr. PreS-2.
- Read-aloud: Welcome Brown Bird . Written by Mary Lyn Ray and illustrated by Peter Sylvada. Harcourt, 2004. Poetic text and stunning paintings tell the story of a wood thrush that makes the long migration between New England and Central America. Includes an author's note that details wood thrush migration and habitat protection. Interest level: Gr. K-4.
- Read-aloud: Whose Garden Is It? Written by Mary Ann Hoberman and illustrated by Jane Dyer. Gulliver Books, c2004. The gardener says the garden belongs to him. But the woodchuck insists that it's his as do the other birds and animals. As they stroll through the exquisite plants and flowers, Mrs. McGee and her child listen and wonder: Whose garden is it? Interest level: Gr. PreS-2.
Visit the Humane myth Web site, a site dedicated to working to create a just and nonviolent future while exposing the" humane myth" - the idea that it is possible to use and kill animals in a respectful or compassionate or humane manner.
